To start with I was given a drug called Mesalamine in pill form along with a strong steroid pack to kick start things. After I went through the steroid pack for the six days I went on regular steroids, Prednisone, until things started to clear up then I was able to cut back on that until I was off of it also. Everything went back to normal, well, more like normal than I was used to anyways. I stayed on the Mesalamine just because I felt it was a miracle drug and the Dr. said it wouldn't hurt me to stay on it. I was cured, Right?
Not a chance.
Everything was good for about a year. Then one day I started to cramp up again and I couldn't figure out why I would be cramping up like this my Colitis had gone away... So I went back to the Dr. The Dr. said that Colitis does not go away, it may go into remission but it never goes away. So I'm now thinking to myself , "What else have these people NOT told me about this disease". As it turns out, quite a lot. I started researching that day, that's the kind of person I am I guess. I was going to find the answers for myself because no one was going to just give them to me.
I found out many things - and I'm still learning - but one of the biggest things is how stress related colitis is. It's not just the "oh my gosh, I'm so stressed out" kind of stress either. It is mental, diet, and physical stresses that all play a big part in how your body reacts to your colitis. Yes the medications will calm it down, but if you keep a diary or a notebook of what you ate, what you did that week, and what was on your mind, a pattern will form and you will see what I mean.
There are many drugs used to control colitis. There are steroids, 5-aminosalicylates, glucocorticoids, immunosuppressants, calcineurin inhibitors, and a few others but these are the major ones. These just about all come in different forms from pill to suppository to enema. There are some that can only be used as an injection or through an IV. I have not had the pleasure of these ones just yet and hope not to. I have tried all the different medications that are available except for the injections. Most of them are not cheap. I know people who have been in remission for 10 to 15 years and all they did was one bout of steroids...not fair huh. Then there are the people like me that cannot get any single drug to work and need a certain cocktail of many to work for them.
